During my undergraduate career at Cal Lutheran, I had the opportunity to experience New Student Orientation three times. As a freshman, my memories are rushes of vivid and lively emotions. As a Peer Advisor (orientation leader), I found myself more connected with my university and eagerly welcoming the incoming students to their new home.

One of my first projects in my current role as Cal Lutheran’s Bilingual Content Producer was to create copy for the NSO 2019 video. So let’s just say I felt right at home with this project!

As I watched the video reel, a wave of nostalgia came over me and I began jotting down all of those feelings and memories. This type of free-flow writing exercise served as a base for the creation of the video copy. I then began to craft the sentences and phrases with one major reminder in my head: what would 18-year old Genesis want to see in this video? NSO embodies a variety of emotions: excitement, nervousness, anxious, eagerness, happiness, bittersweet. Given that this video would highly be one of the first NSO interactions with the new class, I wanted to ensure that the viewers would feel that iconic rush of emotions and get excited to join the Cal Lutheran family.

After I had created the English copy for the video, I then had to translate it into Spanish. When it comes to translation, you are essentially creating a new work of art rather than it being a version. Some of the words do have their direct translation but how do you capture the essence of “ringing in the new school year”? This is where I had to get creative with my word selections and choose those that still transmitted the same idea as the English text.

This video is now live on the Cal Lutheran NSO page and has been shared widely across the community and incoming students.

Durante mi carrera universitaria en Cal Lutheran, yo tuve la oportunidad de ser parte de la Orientación de Nuevos Estudiantes tres veces. En mi primer año, mis memorias están llenas de emociones vívidas. Como líder de orientación, me encontré más conectada con mi universidad y dándole la bienvenida a los estudiantes entrantes a su nuevo hogar.

Uno de mis primeros proyectos en mi rol como Productora de Contenido Bilingüe de Cal Lutheran fue crear la transcripción para el video de NSO 2019. ¡Se puede decir que me sentí muy cómoda con este proyecto!

Mientras miraba el carrete del video, se me apoderó una ola de nostalgia y comencé a anotar todos esos sentimientos y recuerdos. Este ejercicio de escritura de flujo libre sirvió como una base para crear la transcripción del video. Mientras comenzaba a construir las oraciones y frases, tenía un recordatorio importante en mi mente: ¿qué quisiera ver Génesis, a los 18 años, en este video? NSO encarna una variedad de emociones: entusiasmo, nervios, ansiedad, felicidad, agridulce. Dado que este video sería una de las primeras interacciones de NSO con la nueva clase, quería asegurarme de que los espectadores sintieran esa emoción icónica y se emocionaran al unirse a la familia de Cal Lutheran.

Después de crear la transcripción en inglés, tuve que traducirla al español. Cuando se trata de la traducción, esencialmente estás creando una nueva obra en comparación de ser simplemente una versión. Algunas de las palabras tienen su traducción directa, ¿pero cómo captas la esencia de ‘ring in the new school year’? Aquí es donde tuve que ser creativa con ms selección de palabras y elegir aquellas que transmitían la misma idea que el texto en inglés.
